Why Adverbs Matter for CELPIP

Adverbs add precision and sophistication to your writing. They answer "how," "when," "where," and "how often"—essential for demonstrating language control.

Skill Level CELPIP Score Impact
Few/no adverbs CLB 5–6 (basic sentences)
Strategic adverbs CLB 9–10 (sophisticated expression)

The Reality: Adding adverbs shows you can modify and refine your meaning, a hallmark of higher proficiency.

Adverb Types for CELPIP Writing

Adverbs of Manner (How)

Describe how an action is performed. Most end in -ly.

Adverb Example

slowly "Repairs have proceeded slowly despite multiple requests."
repeatedly "I have repeatedly submitted maintenance requests."
negligently "The property was maintained negligently."
effectively "The new system functions effectively."

Adverbs of Time (When)

Describe when something happens.

Adverb Example
immediately "I reported the issue immediately upon discovery."
yesterday "I called the landlord yesterday."
finally "The repairs were finally completed last week."
eventually "The situation will eventually worsen if ignored."

Adverbs of Frequency (How Often)

often "Water often leaks through the ceiling."
rarely "Maintenance visits are rarely scheduled."
never "I have never received a response."

Adverbs of Degree (Intensity)

quite "The response time is quite slow."
almost "The system is almost non-functional."
completely "The repair is completely inadequate."

Common Adjective-Adverb Mistakes in CELPIP

Wrong Correct Why?
"I am doing good." "I am doing well." "well" is an adverb (modifies verb)
"The system is terrible slow." "The system is terribly slow." "terribly" modifies the adjective
"The landlord responded slow." "The landlord responded slowly." Need -ly adverb form
