Article
When to use a, an, and the — common article mistakes in emails, complaints, and opinion tasks.
Why Articles Matter for CELPIP
Articles (a, an, the) seem small, but article errors are common in CELPIP Writing and count against your score. Correct article use shows native-like proficiency.
| Skill Level | CELPIP Score Impact |
|---|---|
| Frequent article errors | CLB 5–6 (non-native patterns) |
| Correct articles | CLB 9–10 (native-like proficiency) |
The Reality: CELPIP examiners notice article mistakes immediately. They signal lower English proficiency, even if your ideas are strong.
The Three Articles
"The" — Specific/Known Noun
Use when the listener/reader knows which noun you mean.
| When to Use | Example |
|---|---|
| First mention → specific | "The apartment has a broken heater." (You both know which apartment) |
| Second mention | "I reported the issue to the landlord." (Already introduced) |
| Unique things | "The sun, the government, the landlord" (only one) |
| Things both parties know | "The rent is too high." (You're talking about a specific rent) |
"A" — General Noun (Consonant Sound)
Use before a noun you're introducing, or a general example.
| When to Use | Example |
|---|---|
| First mention, consonant sound | "A heater, a problem, a tenant" |
| One of many | "I need a plumber to fix a leak." (Any plumber, any leak) |
| Jobs/roles | "He is a contractor." |
"An" — General Noun (Vowel Sound)
Use before a noun starting with a vowel sound, or a general example.
| When to Use | Example |
|---|---|
| First mention, vowel sound | "An apartment, an issue, an inspector" |
| Vowel sounds | "An hour, an umbrella, an urgent matter" |
Common Article Mistakes (CELPIP Specific)
| Wrong | Correct | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| "I live in apartment." | "I live in an apartment." | Need article before noun |
| "I called a landlord yesterday." | "I called the landlord yesterday." | He's a specific person you know |
| "The water is leaking." | "Water is leaking." | No article for uncountable nouns in general |
| "I reported a problem to a landlord." | "I reported the problem to the landlord." | Specific problem and person |
| "The problem is in the wall." | "The problem is in the walls." | (Walls is plural—both need "the") |
Story-Based Article Rule
Imagine telling a story:
First mention: Use "a" or "an"
- "Last week, I discovered a leak in my apartment."
Second+ mentions: Use "the"
- "The leak was coming from the ceiling. I immediately reported the problem to the landlord."
CELPIP Email Writing Tips with Articles
✅ Example: "I am writing to report a serious maintenance issue in the apartment. The heating system is non-functional, and the water damage is spreading. A prompt response is required."
❌ Incorrect: "I am writing to report serious maintenance issue in apartment. Heating system is non-functional, and water damage is spreading. Prompt response is required."
Countable vs. Uncountable (Affects Article Use)
Countable Nouns (Need articles)
Things you can count: heater, leak, room, complaint, pipe
✅ "The heater broke." (ONE heater) ✅ "The pipes are corroded." (MULTIPLE pipes)
Uncountable Nouns (No "a/an", use "the" if specific)
Abstract things: water, damage, frustration, negligence, maintenance
✅ "The water damage is extensive." (specific damage) ✅ "Water is leaking." (general water, no article) ❌ "A water is leaking." (WRONG—uncountable)
