Pronoun
Clear pronoun reference and correct forms so readers never lose track of who or what you mean.
Why Pronoun Clarity Matters for CELPIP
Unclear pronoun reference is a major source of errors in CELPIP Writing. Clear pronouns show you understand sentence structure and grammar.
| Skill Level | CELPIP Score Impact |
|---|---|
| Ambiguous pronouns | CLB 5–6 (confusing sentences) |
| Clear pronouns | CLB 9–10 (professional writing) |
The Reality: CELPIP examiners penalize ambiguous pronouns. Make sure it's obvious which noun you're replacing.
The Three Pronoun Forms
Subject Pronouns (Do the action)
I, you, he, she, it, we, they
Use these when the pronoun is performing the action.
✅ "I called the landlord." ✅ "They ignored the complaint." ✅ "She is the property manager."
Object Pronouns (Receive the action)
me, you, him, her, it, us, them
Use these when the pronoun receives the action.
✅ "The landlord ignored me." ✅ "Contact them immediately." ✅ "Send the notice to her."
Possessive Pronouns (Show ownership)
my, your, his, her, its, our, their
Use these to show something belongs to someone.
✅ "My apartment has water damage." ✅ "Their response was inadequate." ✅ "His negligence caused the problem."
Pronoun Ambiguity: A Major CELPIP Pitfall
| Ambiguous ❌ | Clear ✅ |
|---|---|
| "When the landlord called the tenant, he was angry." | "When the landlord called the tenant, the landlord was angry." |
| "The maintenance staff told the inspector they were trained." | "The maintenance staff told the inspector that the staff were trained." |
| "The apartment and office building both need repairs. It is urgent." | "The apartment and office building both need repairs. Both properties require urgent attention." |
Quick Tip: If someone reads your sentence and says "Who is 'he'?" or "What does 'it' mean?" — you have a pronoun reference problem.
Subject vs. Object Pronoun Mistakes (Common in CELPIP)
| Wrong | Correct | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| "The tenant and him submitted a complaint." | "The tenant and he submitted a complaint." | Subject pronoun needed (doing the action) |
| "Me and the landlord discussed the issue." | "The landlord and I discussed the issue." | Subject pronoun needed |
| "Please contact I about the problem." | "Please contact me about the problem." | Object pronoun needed (receives action) |
| "Between you and I..." | "Between you and me..." | Object pronoun needed |
CELPIP Writing Tips with Pronouns
1. Avoid ambiguity by repeating the noun if unclear:
- ❌ "The landlord called the tenant, and he responded."
- ✅ "The landlord called the tenant, and the tenant responded."
2. Use possessives for clarity:
- ❌ "I contacted the property manager about the damage, and it needs fixing."
- ✅ "I contacted the property manager about the damage, and it (the damage) needs fixing."
3. Keep pronouns near their nouns:
- ❌ "The apartment has mold, broken pipes, and structural cracks. I am concerned about it."
- ✅ "The apartment has mold, broken pipes, and structural cracks. I am concerned about all of these problems."
